Handout bench: a printed piece that makes someone say "wow", and proves it converted

Handout Bench is a system I encountered while working on The Fort List's flyer for their September 30th listing. This tool transforms generic printed handouts into personalized marketing pieces that not only grab attention but also prove their effectiveness through conversion tracking. Let me walk you through how this system works and the specific rules it follows.

The Transformation of The Fort List Flyer

The original flyer for The Fort List was straightforward but uninspiring: Arial font, checkboxes, and competing calls-to-action. The feedback from the founder was blunt: "right now it reads as a chore." The redesigned version, however, was a game-changer. It featured a personalized map showing each business's location with a pinpoint, along with a custom page already set with the business's name. The founder's reaction? "This is dope."

The files involved in this overhaul were located in E:\TE-Code\FortListOS\docs\business\2026-09-30-listing-flyer\bench\, including template.html and build.mjs. The print renderer, E:\TE-Code\FortListOS\scripts\business\render-flyer-set.mjs, generated PDFs and a receipt.json to track conversions. A similar method was applied to a sibling project at E:\TE-Code\FortListOS\design-review\sales-sheet-2026-09-30\, which used tracked QR codes for three doors.

Rules for Effective Handouts

Creating an effective handout requires adhering to strict guidelines:

  1. Accuracy and Relevance: Every claim on the flyer must be current and verifiable. If the QR code leads to a webpage, that page must deliver exactly what the flyer promises. This rule eliminates any misleading traffic promises.

  2. QR Code Usage: The QR codes must link to a webpage, not an app store, as mandated by FortList FC:110. All links go through the company's domain to ensure tracking and brand consistency.

  3. Pricing Policies: Public pieces never display prices unless explicitly promoted by the founder. This decision, labeled D18, was finalized on September 15, 2026.

  4. Data Privacy: Only publicly available information is included on the flyers. Internal data such as sales opportunities or CMS details are filtered out in build.mjs to prevent unauthorized data exposure.

  5. Design Consistency: Brand values come from a centralized token file, fortlist-face.v1.json, ensuring design consistency across all materials without manual color copying.

  6. Testing Before Printing: No material is sent to print in bulk without first producing a test page for manual review. This rule is critical for maintaining quality and accuracy.

  7. Visual Appeal: Flyers must use images, headings, and minimal text to convey their message effectively. This approach reduced Tony's explanation document from 5,027 pixels to 1,978 pixels by prioritizing visuals over text.

The Personal Touch: One Reader, One Ask

When crafting a flyer, it's essential to personalize it for its intended reader. The successful approach involved showing businesses their location on a map and a preview of their dedicated page, making the flyer feel like it was made just for them. This personal touch is crucial for making the recipient say "wow." Additionally, the flyer should focus on a single call-to-action, as multiple offers can dilute the impact.

The URL linked to the flyer must be tested to ensure it leads to the correct page, and the system should store metadata like the source_via tag to track the conversion path. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that every flyer not only impresses but also proves its worth through measurable results.
