Motion Studio: the video harness

The overnight build system for Motion Studio reveals a clear, efficient process for producing video content as code. At the heart of this process is the video-engine/src/engines/html-motion/, which ensures that each video is rendered frame-exact to MP4. This engine is guided by a comprehensive set of rules and references, with every piece of content requiring a reference before a build, as per ref.mjs. This ensures consistency and quality across all outputs.

The build system's initial step involves defining rules that never bend. For instance, text and numbers are strictly coded and stored in piece.json under copy; qc.mjs will flag any deviations. This rule ensures that no generated pixels are used for on-screen text, prices, or logos. Moreover, real-world images must come from the client, while generated ones are regulated under paid-social-ad rule 3.

A critical part of the process involves the use-case selection, outlined in references/use-cases.md. Each use case has specific parameters such as engine, output format, and video length. For example, a site-signature video, which is the brand's named moment on the page, uses the html-motion engine and results in an inline component and preview MP4. This video is typically 1-3 seconds long, or a loop, ensuring it fits seamlessly into a webpage.

The build system's loop is structured and orderly. It starts with setting the engine directory E=video-engine/src/engines/html-motion and running npm install once. The command sequence begins with node $E/new-piece.mjs, which generates a new video piece with specified parameters like client, slug, and use-case. This approach exemplifies a streamlined process where each command is executed in a defined order, minimizing errors and ensuring efficiency.

Lastly, the approval process is stringent. No video goes live without passing through the founder's rating bench, as detailed in client-factory/docs/operations/LIVE-CLIENT-RELEASE-PROCESS.md. This step is crucial in maintaining the quality and integrity of the video content produced by Motion Studio.

By adhering to these rules and processes, the overnight build system of Motion Studio acts as a reliable harness for video production, ensuring each piece is crafted with precision and purpose.
